U.S. Gun Violence is a U.S. cultural export

Shinzo Abe, the former Prime Minister of Japan was assassinated today. The assassin shot him with a homemade gun. Japan has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. And I know some conservative and right-wing folks are going to start saying, “See? Gun control laws don’t work!” This isn’t about the gun control laws, this is about U.S. gun violence.

In 2020, 4 people were killed by gun shootings in Japan. In that same year, over 45,000 people were killed by gun shootings in the United States. And in the past 2 years, that number has increased for the U.S. while it has decreased for Japan.

We live in a world where culture is global. And just like in the United States where people are influenced by anime and manga, in Japan, people are influenced by something that is very U.S. culture, gun violence. Yup, you heard that right. One of the U.S.’s cultural exports is gun culture and violence.

Sure, there are many reasons, AND. Without a shadow of a doubt the entire world is being impacted by U.S. gun violence. Gun violence culture in the U.S. is “all-American” white supremacist, capitalist, colonial culture.
