There will never be a perfect platform because the capitalist ableist colonialism under which they are created, is inherently exploitative. The search for and expectation of perfectionism is its toxic trait that is then pushed onto us.
The obvious platforms such as Meta, Google, and Apple are of course not liberatory. But neither is Bluesky. Proton is not liberatory either. Every tech platform runs in a capitalist colonial system, on exploited minerals, power, land, and labor.
These are constant decisions we will have to make as we fight for actual liberation. What we can do is constantly build and grow new tools, while also using existing ones in the most helpful way possible.
For instance, we know that end-to-end encryption is more secure for all parties than one way encryption. We know that a company that is focused on privacy might better handle our data than one that is focused on speed or branding.
There are decisions we can make within the structure we are in while we are building other tools.
The technology itself within many platforms is actually quite remarkable. It is the fact that they are being used to surveil, control, and steal that we have to confront and challenge.
I recommend that you do not pick a single platform. Do not entrench yourself in any single source. Do not allow one entity to singularly hold your precious data.
Spread yourself around when using platforms.
Perfectionism should be out. Variety packs are in.
