Grace Lee Boggs said, “You cannot change any society unless you take responsibility for it, unless you see yourself as belonging to it, and responsible for changing it.”
We are fortunate to be alive in a very specific and extraordinary time where more and more are willing to acknowledge the undeniable flaws of the existing system, a system that must come down. AND ALSO, remember that the system hasn’t been toppled YET.
We should not abandon our world and each other in our desire to end Empire.
We have the opportunity to think deeply about and strategize what we want to plant and how to heal life. What it means to heed Indigeneity.
Imperialism has worked hard to make those it is oppressing feel as if they do not belong anywhere by stealing their land, dignity, and connection.
And to become Empire, Empire had to eat itself first.
Empire destroys the land and life of those it seeks to oppress, and it also destroyed itself to become Empire.
Thus Empire, by definition, cannot comprehend responsibility because it no longer belongs anywhere nor amongst anyone.
Empire often talks of rights, but never about responsibility. Rights devoid of responsibility are simply more oppression.
Empire will never know responsibility.
Empire will fall because it believes land and life belong to it. No, it is that the people belong to the land and life, and so WE must take responsibility to change our conditions.
Empire will fall because the people will take it down. Yes, Empire will fall, but the people will not. We must be responsible for us. Do not abandon each other. We must hold us through to get us there.
We are responsible for each other.
We have the opportunity right now to imagine, create, and build the communities we have always wanted.
Be learning how to be closer to the land. Be creating local connections.
Be building communities of care.
Be changing now.
Responsibility, belonging, change.
