QR codes can use used to send you to malicious websites. So don’t just go randomly scanning QR codes if you see them out there.
Hello, it’s your friendly neighborhood anti-oppression digital security expert.
Always be aware of the context of where you’re scanning a QR code. Is it a menu at a restaurant? An art exhibit? An informational poster?
But also remember what I always tell you, anything can be hacked.
Someone could easily go to a restaurant and put a fake QR code on top of the existing restaurant QR code. And that malicious QR code could lead to a fake website that says, “Enter your credit card information here so you don’t have to pay at the end of your meal.”
Sure, most people won’t fall for it. But the hacker really only needs one person to fall for it.
So, don’t go chasing QR codes, please stick to the RFIDs and links that you’re used to.
