Overlapping Privacy Battles

Something that I’ve noticed over the past couple of decades that I’ve been doing digital security, data privacy, AI research, and emergency preparedness, is that those are all issues that the conservative right are also interested in.

I specifically talk about my work from a tech justice perspective, but because I cover things like decentering Big Tech, de-Googling, de-Appleing, de-Microsofting, worst-case scenario preparation, fighting biometric theft, and privacy and security, I often notice that people from the far right want to learn from me and follow me because of that information.

In that aspect, it has always been a strange and surreal space.

For instance, some of the most vocal people against facial recognition are on the far right. Some of the most avid campaigns for data privacy come from people who are fascists. One of the reasons why we even have some of the legislation around privacy and security today is because of conservative politicians.

Now, the world I am fighting for is vastly different from the one they are trying to install. I do tech justice for collective liberation, and they are often leveraging tech for oppression.

But more frequently than you might imagine, there are many parallel fights when it comes to privacy and security issues.

This has given me, over many years, very specific tools and insight, because so often we are fighting for the similar objectives, but for vastly different reasons.

As a community organizer for collective liberation that also does tech justice work, I have very specific and useful lessons that I’ve learned over the years in this strange shared space. So while we fight the fascists and Empire and build our liberatory world, watch this space as I’ll continue to share so many lessons I’ve learned.
