Memorial Day and Mass Shootings

Written May 30, 2022

The first Memorial Day procession was led by 3000 Black schoolchildren in 1865. Formerly enslaved, free Black folks in Charleston, SC organized a day to honor those fallen and mark the struggle against enslavement.

Black school children opening the day to confront the white supremacist, colonial, capitalist violence of war. That is, where we still are today.

Memorial Day often marks the 1st rite of summertime. This will, without a doubt, be the deadliest summer yet.

There’ve been at least 8 more mass shootings since Uvalde, TX. Over 27 of the 220 shootings this year were school shootings, 150 days in. Over 1 mass shooting a day.

We are in a constant state of mourning, rage, survival, grief, trauma.

That is white supremacy.
That is capitalism.

We cannot, absolutely cannot move forward without tearing these systems down.

Let’s go.
