For this International Women’s Day I want to share that there have ancestrally been more expansive ideas of what it means to be a woman for literally THOUSANDS of years all over the world before we got to the current colonized narrow idea of what many think is a woman today.
Prior to the last few hundred years of colonization, cultures and civilizations much more advanced than the U.S. and Europe, understood that gender is not and cannot be binary. The earth isn’t binary and the universe isn’t binary. And humans are most definitely not binary.
Many of our ancestors already understood that genderqueer and genderfluid ways of being exist even within what is felt to be a woman.
Truly, oppression stifles thinking to be smaller and narrower to even entertain that gender could be reduced into 1 and 2.
Colonialism is the least creative poison, stripping people of their understanding of infiniteness. The insistence & enforcement of the binary is a recent concoction, directly connected to colonialism, oppression, & even more recently joined by white dominance.
Let us not fall into the trap of colonizer binaries. Let us remember our ancestors were expansive. Reject oppressor binaries of limitation. Our ancestors wanted us to understand we can be limitless.
