Lauren Olamina’s journal entry for today February 1, 2025 in Parable of the Sower from 1993, by Octavia E. Butler:
“We had a fire today. People worry so much about fire, but the little kids will play with it if they can.”
Also today, in the same location written about by Butler, the Eaton and Palisades fires that burned for nearly a month, were finally announced 100% contained.
In 2000, in an essay she wrote for Essence, Butler wrote, “I didn’t make up the problems. All I did was look around at the problems we’re neglecting now and give them about 30 years to grow in to full-fledged disasters.”
“No. I mean there’s no single answer that will solve all of our future problems. There’s no magic bullet. Instead there are thousands of answers—at least. You can be one of them if you choose to be.”
May we all look around and choose to be an answer.
