Equity and Accessibility aren’t Perks

Just a reminder that equity and accessibility are not perks, they’re not bonuses, they’re the BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT that every organization should have.

All-gender restrooms. Ability to enter and exit a building through a ramp, or elevator, or other means. Open and supportive conversations around mental health. Education for everyone around all of these topics.

Those aren’t perks, those are necessities.

Health insurance is not a perk, but a requirement.

Having People of Color at your organization, not a perk. People of Color are not props. It’s a BARE necessity to be inclusive.

A lot of organizations like you make you think that What is actually necessary, is a perk. And somehow they’re giving you a bonus by making those things available.

If a company or organization makes you think that all of those bare necessities like health care, BIPOC, education, mental health support, and accessibility are bonuses, add-ons, or treats, my advice to you is to think whether or not you really want to work there.
