DeSantis signing a bill requiring
“AAPI history” in the same breath as banning the teaching of Black history and pushing anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation, is a classic implementation of the model minority myth.
It is meant to drive a wedge within People of the Global Majority.
We know the this so-called “AAPI history” will not cover the friendship between Malcolm X and Yuri Kochiyama, Grace Lee Boggs, or the Third World Liberation Front.
Nor will they cover Chinese forced labor, the US’s colonial role in the Vietnam War, Korean War, across Southeast Asia, the Philippines, or Hawai’i.
They will not cover the long history of Black and Asian solidarity movements, and global Asian anti-colonial histories.
What will be covered is the white savior narrative, forced ally governments, and anti-Chinese sentiment.
This is all a strategy to fragment People of the Global Majority.
Because by doing so, DeSantis and his cohort are able to further white dominant culture.
Fellow Asians, do not align or ally yourself with white dominant culture. It only leads to downfall. We cannot allow our community to be leveraged as a wedge.
So, he wants to see “AAPI history?”
Fellow Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, Pasifika family, then let’s show them our history by making history.
We rise up.
