Community Building: Crowdsource Your Skills List

Some time ago, I wrote this piece on taking small, simple measures to begin community building and preparedness. It involved creating a list of things you are good at, digging beyond what professionalism, academia, and money determine as “good” or “valuable” skills.

Let us continue building on this. This time, build a second list by asking people around you to name your skills and gifts. Ask friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and those that interact with you in a variety of ways.

This second list may be similar to your first list that you compiled yourself, or they could be different. All of this is helpful and valuable information.

Now you have two lists. One that you build about things that you’re good at, and the second is crowdsourced by you asking people around you what skills and gifts they believe that you have.

As you build those lists, you realize that you are good at so much more than what society tells you. Every single person has skills.

One of the foundational ways we build community is by sharing those skills and learning from each other.

We will build on these two lists in the third part of this series soon.

Happy list and world building!
