AAPI and its variations APA or API are useful for some movement organizing contexts such as coalition building and mass mobilizing work. They are helpful terms, at times. However, like the term POC, these terms used generically, can lead to erasure as well.
When you say AAPI do you actually mean East Asian? Are you in any way truly talking about Pacific Islanders? Or South Asians, Southeast, Southwest Asians? Are you speaking of all Asians from the over 50 Asian countries and territories? Are you unsure what those 50 are?
Learn, think through the context. If you do use the terms AAPI, APA, API, think through how you are including or excluding. Honor our different struggles. Our solidarity comes through our specificity.
