AI is a Tool We Are Already Using

To be clear, you are already using AI on a daily basis. For example, Google Search, maps, and phone cameras use AI algorithms.

So if you say you refuse to use AI, or that it’s inherently evil, you won’t be able to use Google Search, and also your phone, which uses AI technologies such as predictive text, face recognition, voice-to-text, maps, and even the embedded in the camera.

Your phone is a tool that can be used to do incredible things we would not be able to do otherwise. You could also choose to use it as a weapon, or it can even be weaponized against you.

It can be used to open up accessibility and opportunities in ways that were not possible before. It can also make tasks more inaccessible and create barriers for many.

Phones are also created through some of the most environmentally and human-damaging methods. Yet, many of us still make the decision to use this tool that was created through non-ethical means and resources.

Just keep in mind that AI is a tool, like other tools we make decisions about. So before you write an entire tool and technology off, think about the fact that we humans are the ones creating and using the tool.

Beyond just the tool itself, how that tool is created and used is an important consideration. Companies and platforms must absolutely be held accountable. AND, we can also make the most informed decisions possible when we decide to engage with them.
