AI, Art, and Agency

The many AI filters folks are using to generate artistic images of themselves, they’re beautiful, but there are so many factors to also consider when you decide to use such platforms.

I work with organizations around AI ethics and I have some notes for all of us.

Boundaries around property, privacy, and consent are still very muddled in the AI space.

Some of these AI platforms use IP and identities without consent, through images, videos, audio, and text the algorithms use to train.

Additionally, when you use these platforms, you are agreeing to their Terms and Conditions, which themselves, often give them the widest breadth to use your data.

And remember, in today’s world, your data is often you.

I recommend you be wary whenever you are submitting your information anywhere.

And create a threshold or agreement for yourself (this will be different for everyone) and for each instance, around how much data you are okay with sharing.

We are, inevitably, already in an AI world, so we are all impacted. Yes, even when you haven’t explicitly consented.

What we can do as individuals is to be vigilant with our creations and our selves, and all of the algorithms hungry for our data.

As an AI educator, I strongly believe AI provides wondrous and helpful opportunities.

I use it daily, as do most of us. To make our lives more accessible, more creative, more beautiful.

Create your agreements around it so you can be informed and have as much agency as possible.
