Having worked in AI ethics and tech justice for over 15 years, something that echoes throughout the years consistently is people believing it’s either AI or us.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
Whenever there is a major development, like with ChatGPT, people tend to go into a fear spiral.
We have been witnessing coverage about how AI lies, gives false sources, incorrect predictions, and is biased.
But we forget that humans do that too. Every single day.
What AI does and the way we’ve constructed it reflects how truly human we are and how we have mirrored that in our tech.
Just as we have criteria when interacting with humans, for example, stranger danger or getting to know someone you’ve just met before trusting them, don’t abandon those skills when interacting with AI.
Just because AI is at times extremely impressive, that doesn’t mean we have all of a sudden lost all of our impressive human skills.
Thinking of our relationship as AI AND us can be empowering and help us move forward with the grace and awkwardness that is humanity.
