Accessibility Cannot be an Afterthought

Every time we are not reflected in the world around us, it is a sign that we are not already considered, that we are an afterthought.

That means in websites, utensils, tools, art, containers, books, media, buildings, bathrooms, furniture, clothing, and yes, underwear.

When we live in worlds where we are an afterthought, laws, healthcare, governments, schools, homes, public spaces, and services are built without us in mind.

When the world is built without us in mind, that world is often adversarial toward us. It is built against us. It is built with barriers embedded in the cement, in the ingredients, in the environment, in minds.

Inaccessibility is inherent in white dominance, capitalism, and colonialism.

A world built for some becomes a world built against everyone else.

To be truly free means everyone, that’s all of us, we all get to get there.
