Yoon’s White Skull Squad

When Yoon invoked martial law on December 3rd, it evoked the traumatic violence and massacres of authoritarianism of the 1980s.

In another hearkening to this history of suppressing democracy movements, the conservative right Yoon supporters have donned white hard hats under the Anti-Communist Youth League as 백골단 (“White Skull Squad”).

This is, in fact, a terrifying resurrection.

The “White Skull Squad” is the EXACT name authoritarians used in the 80s and 90s as part of brutally, and often fatally, suppressing democracy movements and organizers.

Yoon is supported by the incoming Trump administration. The U.S. will drive deeper the wedge it planted when it divided Korea in the first place.

We must be prepared.

Our memories of our past are long. Korean resistance movements are deeply embedded in our bodies and minds. May they keep us fighting and protected.

White Skulls in the 1980s:

White Skulls officially resurrected at a press conference yesterday at the National Assembly by conservative People’s Power Party representative Kim Meen-geon.
